Analytic practitioners speak – an interview with author Nauman Sheikh
I have been interviewing analytic practitioners periodically – last year I interested Andrea Scarso, CEO of MoneyFarm and more recently I interviewed Tracy Allison Altman, co-founder of Ugly Research. Next up is Nauman Sheikh, a seasoned professional of Data & Analytics. Nauman was introduced to me by a client who really liked his book Implementing Analytics: A Blueprint for Design, Development, and Adoption (as do I). Nauman and I share a passion for making sure that analytics are not just developed, but deployed into decision making systems and processes.
What’s your background, how did you come to be working in analytics?
My background is purely in computer science and Started in software development with Object oriented
White Paper of the Week: In-Database Analytics
This week’s white paper of the week is a short paper on In-database Analytics
In-database analytics offer a powerful tool for embedding advanced analytics in a critical component of IT infrastructure. As the amount of data involved has grown and as data infrastructure has become more powerful, the adoption of in-database analytic technology has grown rapidly. This white paper sponsored by SAS introduces in-database analytics and explores their role in embedding advanced analytics in Decision Management Systems.
Don’t forget you can find many other white papers on our white paper resources page and find the <a href="https://decisionmanagementsolutions.com/decision-management-technology"

Combining this technology with a Decision Management approach (and with Decision Modeling) helps build compliance into every process, every system and meet 5 key challenges in compliance.

Webinar: Best Practices in Targeted Legacy Modernization in Government
I am giving a webinar on Best Practices in Targeted Legacy Modernization in Government March 5, 2014 at Noon Eastern with Claye Greene, MD of government solutions provider and Decision Management Solutions partner TechBlue.
Many government organizations are coping with aging legacy systems that are costly to maintain, difficult to change and lack the modern architecture needed to satisfy today’s consumer. Instead of trying to replace an entire system with the high risks and costs involved in such a project, these government organizations are instead adopting a decision management approach and business rules management systems to target their modernization efforts where they have the biggest impact.
In this live webinar we’ll share know how and best practices from their extensive experience helpi
Mckinsey, analytics and decision models
There was an interesting article from McKinsey this month – The benefits—and limits—of decision models – by Phil Rosenzweig.
As Phil points out using models (and he is talking about analytic models) helps avoid common biases that undermine leaders’ judgments such as over confidence, a focus on recent data etc. And I would add not just leaders – it also helps avoid the biases of staff throughout the organization. In fact the examples – credit card fraud (not really a recent application but still a great one), loans, pricing, insurance – are not made by “leaders” at all but by front line workers or automated systems. They are operational decisions and the value of using analytic models in these decisions is, if anything, even greater as the people concerned have less time to d
